Iguanodon was a vegetarian that lived around 135 to 125 million years ago during the early Cretaceous period.
Like all Ornithischians Iguanodon had a toothless beak for stripping pine needles and other tough vegetation off branches, and lots of teeth in is jaws for chewing it.
Iguanodon had a single 50 / 150 mm (2/4in) long conical spike on each hand that could be used for defence or for digging up roots.
Iguanodon means "Iguana tooth" because its teeth resembled that of a modern Iguana. The first fossils were found in England in 1822. It was named by Gideon A. Mantell in 1925. Fossils have been found in Europe, Africa and the USA.
